This wasn’t an argument her presence would do anything to help resolve; on the contrary, she felt like another nail in the coffin of his father’s condemnation. It did not surprise her to watch him take the thorniest path.

Jensen’s eyes eventually tugged away from the scene. Natalie did not turn away from the ugliness even if she did not interfere, though she hung a little back like she was uncertain calling notice to herself might only ignite more flames. The set of her expression was its habitual still; a calm port in a storm, though distant as a lighthouse on another shore.

Silence stretched eternal in the car, and not the comfortable kind. It was going to be a long night.
