Nicholas Trano

((This badly formatted facsimile of a biographical article is probably littered with grammatical mistakes, but I just wanted to get it out there.))

WikiNet--we beat out Wikipedia a couple decades ago. Deal with it.

Nicholas Trano is a modern political demagogue who is rapidly attaining widespread appeal within the United States with his denouncement of the CCD and support of groups such as the Minutemen, alleged to be terrorist organizations by the CCD. His strong support of the Liberty First party and millions of dedicated readers have turned him into one of the most influential journalists of the era. [citation needed] He has been openly denounced by officials within the CCD as a supporter of multiple terrorist groups, and is currently working towards a political career. He is expected to announce his candidacy for the presidency in the coming months.

Early Life:

Nicholas Trano was born on September 11th, 2013. He was one of the lucky ones. His father, Christopher Trano, was a Texas oil tycoon. His mother Jean Gunther was the elder Trano's third trophy wife.

In the wake of a series of natural disasters, Christopher Trano's fields became one of the nation's few remaining major supplies of oil. He would've become a billionaire, the demand was so high. Sadly, he only padded his bank account with a few more millions before President Clinton signed an executive order to seize all the oil fields. Nicholas Trano would allegedly go on to describe her as a "commie bitch."

The elder Trano, his wife and newborn son fled to the inner states, eventually deciding to settle in South Dakota. They raised their son in the relative safety of Aberdeen, then a small city which was rapidly growing into the economic powerhouse it is today as the rich fled from the coastal states. The early years of Nicholas Trano's life were fairly uneventful, although he did progress remarkably in his schooling up until sixth grade.

Around that time his parents went through an ugly divorce, and perhaps as a childish way of getting back at both of them he withdrew inwards, paying less attention to academic pursuits. However, he did do incredibly well in english and history classes despite his near constant failure to turn in homework, and incessant interruptions in the classroom. In his early high school years he gained a position on one of the town's smaller news nets and contributed several well received articles under a pseudonym. His articles were unique, as they represented a conservative viewpoint that was fairly rare in the rich, mostly white town of Aberdeen.

Late in his senior year of high school, he chose to join the United States Navy, or what was left of it at the time, as he felt he would have a difficult time getting into a good college. He scored in the 93rd percentile on the ASVAB, and qualified for the Navy's nuclear power program. However after a medical problem nullified his contract, he chose to do Mass Communications instead. Essentially working as part of the U.S military's propaganda corps, by the end of his five year commitment he was quoted as saying he was "thoroughly disillusioned with the U.S government" of the time.

In his words, he found that more often than not his job was to put a positive spin on failed military programs than it was to showcase his beloved nation's military might. When his five years were finished, he got right out. He left the Navy as a Petty Officer 2nd class. With military experience, it was far easier than it would have been otherwise to find work on the major news nets. Eventually he settled on the Vulpes net as his primary place of journalistic residence. While most of his early years were spent on what he considered unfavorable jobs such as obituaries and investigative pieces on highly publicized crimes, eventually his opinion pieces got a decent following.

Political

As one major opponent has said, "It turns out, that when you live in a country that used to rule the world a voice urging a return to grace can find a lot of ears." Contrary to his witty, warm demeanor in person his articles on the news nets were a vision of brilliant, fiery demagoguery. In the rapid rise of the CCD, Nicholas Trano sees a repetition of history, and often wonders aloud when the Ascendancy will become "the next Stalin, or Hitler, or both." Trano has been a vocal supporter of DARPA programs to develop "next-gen" weapons.

He also urges a return to cold war tactics in regards to the CCD, claiming in a speech made on September 26 2040 that

"...Containment worked. You can argue all you like about the morality of propping up two-bit dictatorships in third world countries, but it worked. There aren't any communist countries left, because we made sure to topple every last one. I'm not going to say America's always going to be the 'good guys.' The problem is that a lot of soft-hearted people in this country think our duty is to be those guys for the rest of the world. Our duty is to ourselves. In the badly paraphrased words of Ronald Reagan, we're the last bastion of true freedom left on the planet, and if we fall there's nowhere left to escape. We're off balance right now, and Ascendancy's got all the cards. To those people I say this: The only way to help the world is to help ourselves. Dictatorships crumble when the leader dies, and an empire the size of CCD isn't built to last. We might not have the hard power right now to go toe to toe with the thousand pound bear, but we have more than enough soft power--SEALs, Delta Force, Rangers and who knows what else--to stab that bear in the paws enough times that it'll stay in its den until it starves. Empires thrive on conquest, and the longer we deny them that conquest the better chance we have of preserving liberty..."

When contacted for comment on the speech, CCD officials scoffed. One, quoted on condition of anonymity, stated that "if the yanks think that they can keep playing God, they're in for a rude awakening. Rome fell and never rose again... ...Britain fell and never rose again. Now it's the American empire's turn... ...[Idiots] like Nicholas Trano just don't have the manners to fall gracefully."

Despite dozens of death threats, Trano continues to speak out against the rise of the CCD, and has been a vocal supporter of alleged terrorist groups such as the Minutemen and Asas Ghayara.* Interpol has opened an investigation into his finances in an attempt to arrest him for funding known terrorist groups, however their findings are inconclusive as of now. In the words of an anonymous Interpol agent familiar with the case, it is "unlikely that we'll be able to try the suspect even if we find sufficient evidence, due to his high profile and position in the United States unless we catch him travelling abroad."

Liberty First:

Nicholas Trano is a strong and vocal supporter of Liberty First, an ultra nationalist neoconservative party which is rapidly gaining ground in the U.S--due in no small part to Trano's news net fame. Founded by the late Senator Rand Paul in the late 2020's, their goal is to restore America's place in the world, and at home. Trano, and the party, claim that the "old Republican days of demanding tax and spending cuts won't cut it in today's world." "The CCD is the thousand pound bear in the proverbial room," says Trano, "and you can't keep that bear out without some nice walls, or kill it without some nice guns."

In the short term their goal is to increase taxes and invest heavily in the research and development sectors both for civilian life and military defense. They believe that America has little chance of matching a continent spanning empire in production, and instead plan to elevate their technological industry to new levels. While their economic policy may appear fairly liberal, they constantly refer to themselves as "die-hard constitutionalists." LF politicians have never voted in favor of any policy that contradicts the Constitution, and are actively (although slowly) working to kill the national bank.

LF represents a new, moderate breed of American conservative. Their idealism has been tempered by an understanding of the harsh realities of the world. They claim absolute dedication to their nation, to the exclusion (and many opponents say detriment) of all others. Their stance on the CCD can be easily summed up with the words of their late founder Rand Paul: "Until the CCD can be counterbalanced, the American people remain under constant threat of tyranny. Thus, our goal is liberty from the CCD first, before complete freedom can be achieved."

Nicholas Trano is currently the front runner for Liberty First's presidential candidacy. However, he has not yet publicly expressed his willingness to run. Officials in both the American and CCD governments have been quite vocal in their worry that if a volatile political candidate such as Trano achieves office, instability between the two titans will result.

Vulpes News Network

Nicholas Trano is a weekly contributor to the Vulpes News Network, and he has used his incredibly popular weekly segment as a major sounding board for his political ideals. He often interviews important political figures on the show. He also uses his massive audience as a powerful voting bloc. When he throws his weight behind a candidate, that candidate has a major advantage. It is believed that his popularity will play a major role in the 2048 election, where it is believed he will be the candidate for Liberty First.

Published Works

Nicholas Trano is currently the publisher of several books which, while popular among his readers and those politically aligned with him, have been lambasted by more moderate and liberal critics as "a virtual civilian declaration of war." When asked for comment on some of the criticism of his work, Trano released a statement on his Vulpesnet channel: "There's been a lot of outcry over my last book, Freedom's Last Stand, and I get it. A lot of people have become content with our position as the omega wolf of the world's pack. When I advocate a return to our original position, people call me a war monger and a fool. Some people are satisfied with begging a dictator for scraps, I'm not. If you're ready to stand up and live, then stand with me. If we keep lying down, we're all going to die."

A Return to Greatness:

A Return to Greatness (Mons, 2047) was Trano's first book and was mostly overlooked by readers, only selling several thousand copies. It presented a far more moderate viewpoint on the political landscape of the world at the time, advocating open dialogue between the United States and the CCD. As a fairly new writer with no following, the book was quickly forgotten by America's mainstream media.

Freedom's Last Stand:

Freedom's Last Stand (Mons, 2042) was released after Trano had gained a significant following, and topped the libnet's best selling list for political and philosophical texts. In the book, Trano took a far more aggressive stance against CCD expansion and advocated a strong U.S. response. He voiced disgust with how far the country had fallen, and offered up several possible solutions for problems facing the country. While receiving high ratings from conservative-to-moderate review nets, left-leaning readers were very vocal in their disagreement with the message portrayed in the book.

((Some time between leaving the military and becoming a journalist, his ability to channel manifested itself. While he survived the spark, he has no idea at all about his abilities. He often channels without knowing it, and may sometimes unconsciously use a form of compulsion on others. He can't make you kill your mother--unless you hate your mother, in which case he can't make you NOT kill her--but he can be oddly persuasive at times.

His block is that he can't do any channeling without saying exactly what he's doing. That's why he's capable of convincing people to do things unconsciously--he's saying it aloud.

*Asas Ghayara is me butchering the Arabic Language. Asas Ghayara SHOULD mean Foundation for Change, but I'm just a suburban Catholic white dude so what the hell do I know? It probably won't matter anyways unless somebody wants to be an Arabic freedom fighter and latch into that name. Maybe I'll use them as flavor in some articles later on though.))

Continued From The Interview With Nikolai Brandon

Nicholas Trano sat nursing a glass of whiskey on the flight home as he cleaned up the interview transcript and got ready to release it. Brandon was impressive, he'd give him that. He was intelligent, charming... also obviously megalomaniacal but he wouldn't expect most people to pick up on that. Not unless they wanted to. Besides
, he thought, in a world like this he's got good company.
Cults sprouting up like weeds, drug lords conquering South America despite the efforts of the two largest militaries in the worldand, as the icing on the cake,
fascists conquering the world.

Still, what happened at the end there was weird. He felt this--euphoria
... and suddenly the leader of the un-free world was barely able to keep his mouth shut. Of course, that lasted for barely half a minute before some kind of whiplash hit him, and menace filled the room. What caused that?
Some kind of CCD neuro-weapon test backfired? No, that couldn't be it,
wouldn't be worth the risk at something that public.

It was an odd situation all around, that. Weirder still was that it'd happened before. Some of his biggest news breaks had occurred right after that same euphoria took him. "See if I could--feel it..."
What the hell did that mean?
And then by the time he looked up, the man was running away with his tail between his legs, surrounded by underlings.

When he thought of the last times he'd gotten that--feeling, they almost all coincided with something extraordinary happening. Like the time he got his chief to let him off watch so he could go partying in Thailand. Good times.
Of course, he'd spent the next couple days lying in an infirmary in the worst pain he'd ever suffered. Some odd Asian bug, they'd thought then. He'd just been glad it wasn't AIDS. What happens in Thailand stays there.

Come to think of it, the first several times he'd gotten that feeling--the first several times things... happened the way he wanted them to, he'd gotten sick. None had been as bad as that very first occasion, of course. And then, slowly, it just stopped altogether. Not the things, or the feeling. The sickness just disappeared. Maybe he'd worked up a tolerance for it, like if you ride roller coasters a lot? He didn't have all the answers.

Even if he did, what the hell was he supposed to do about it? Tell some doctor that sometimes I feel high as a goddamn kite and good things happen?
He couldn't do anything of the sort, that was for sure. He'd worked too hard and too long to risk his career if something like that got out. Liberty First had been eyeing him for their presidential nomination, too. If eyeing was a fancy way of saying barely-concealed begging. That'd all dry up if he started seeing a shrink, he was sure of it.

Finally, he finished the last few tweaks to the interview, slapped on the list of questions the censors blocked and sent it up for publishing. Sighing, he downed his whiskey and leaned his head back. Sleep first. Figure out crazy magical powers later.

It'd been a long day--Nicholas had been coordinating fundraisers for Dayton disaster victims, editing news articles from other Vulpesnet contributors and drinking. Perhaps a bit more heavily than he should have... but how else do you handle figuring out that you can use goddamn magic?
He still couldn't control it, but he knew it was there if he could just--nothing.
Again. Another shot, then. The wonders of working from home in the modern age.

Since the interview, and the Dayton disaster, his daily routine had been pretty constant. Keep up appearances to the outside world and try to figure out what the fuck is going on.
He tried to do some real good, of course. "Lord knows those poor bastards in Ohio could use a little."

But even with the near-constant workflow he was bored, professionally. No new stories broke out, no new diseases or cures. No new cults mutilating the genitalia of pregnant women--now that was a Pulitzer.
So it was with a resigned feeling, a lack of expectation, that he keyed into his mail feed. And for the most part he was right, until his eyes drifted--a little more slowly and wobbly than they should have--to a message with an interesting subject line.

It was addressed simply enough, to Nicholas Trano's Vulpesnet account. But the sender, now that was interesting. CCD press corps, executive office of the Ascendancy. Probably some cease and desist letter threatening him with prosecution or a civil suit for demonizing the CCD--he'd gotten those before. But the sender was new, he usually got the threats from their judicial custody. So he opened it.

Nicholas Trano,
Vulpesnet

In response to allegations that political freedom of speech has been hindered in the CCD capital, the Custody is formally inviting members of nonCustody-accredited press to participate in a two-week rotation on the Ascendancy's Pool--the Moscow journalists accredited to regularly cover the activities of the Ascendancy.

So essentially they were asking him to come on a guided tour through their city, like the Norks did back in the early nineties up through the tens and twenties. He'd probably see a few sights, talk to a few actors and get shipped straight on home, with the implied expectation that he give them a glowing recommendation as the future overlords of America. Not buying it.

If accepted, you will be provided an honorarium, travel, amd five-star accomodation, with access to on-site Custody press conferences, be eligible to cover news of the day, and attend regularly scheduled AP events such as dinners, flights, and tours.

Well at least they're trying hard to get me to spread my legs before they fuck me.
People had called him a whore for the radical right before--a ridiculous statement. As far as conservatives went he was pretty moderate in his own opinion--but even if they were right, he would be a damn high class whore. Nicholas didn't take payment in the form of fancy dinners and tours. Time for another shot.

The Central Custody Press Corps have also invited representatives from China's Oriental Daily, the Australian Broadasting Corporation, the Canadian Press, and Notimex.

Your immediate response requested.

Hah.
They were trying to win over famous news personalities from every country that wasn't already under Dominion control or too much of a shithole to want. He couldn't call it particularly clever--it was, after all, a pretty obvious decision--but it wasn't a bad idea either. Well, they can call up Piers if they want someone to deep throat their egos. When is that bastard going to retire?

His decision-making may not have been the best at the time, but he was right. In the wake of the Dayton disaster, America needed him far more than the CCD did. And even if his country didn't need him more, he was more loyal to it than he would ever be to the CCD. He wasn't going to spend time in a five star hotel being lied to by politicians while there were people to help.

He still had to schedule two more fundraisers. It was going to be a long week, and he'd have to... he looked at the bottle--he didn't even know what he'd grabbed other than that it was clear and strong. Half empty. Scheduling could wait until tomorrow.

Still, he swiped over to the reply screen. A simple no would do.

A political public figure such as Nicholas Trano was going to be under surveillance by any number of organizations: domestic and foreign. Like any public figure, tracking the individual man, estimating his next locations, and knowing with whom he traveled was readily available information.

It was near dusk when a black four-door sedan pulled up to Nicholas Trano's home. A woman emerged first from the passenger side. She wore a black pants' suit, the unbuttoned jacket of which covered a white, button-down blouse. Her brunette hair, slick and straight, was pulled to a ponytail worn at the back of her neck. She closed the car door without concern for the sound rattling across the tranquil front lawn.

A man emerged from the driver's side. He was similarly dressed in a black suit, though he wore a dark blue tie with his crisp white button-up. He had sandy-brown hair well-styled and light-eyes, but, the confidence to his jaw promoted no image of a pampered boy from the Hamptons. His gaze swept across the landscape, then he patiently buttoned the jacket of his suit and rounded the car to join his partner.

The woman glanced at her watch briefly as the man rung the front bell.

To whomever answered the door, the gentleman spoke. "This is Agent Reed and I am Agent Abrams." The pair simultaneously retrieved their badges and photo-identification for verification. "We are from the NCS Counterintelligence Center of the CIA. May we come in?"

It was barely eight o'clock but Nicholas was ready to pass out. Dignified begging can do that to a man, and the amount of wine needed for two hours' worth of sipping and talking didn't help matters. So he sat in his favorite chair, and lazily keyed into his message feed before heading off to bed. Of course, something had to ruin his rest. That something was one of his bodyguards, Frank or Fred or something.

Frank or Fred or something half-hurried into the room--it was odd watching a hulking, retired marine scurry--and destroyed any hope Nicholas had for a peaceful, relaxing evening.

Once he was close enough to avoid shouting, he quickly told his boss why he was bothering him. "Mr. Trano, sorry to bother you but a couple spooks just showed up."

Nicholas looked up at him. "Spooks?"

"CIA. Two of 'em. They're in the waiting room." He had a thick Boston accent. Didn't think those accents even existed anymore.

CIA. Fuck.
At least he wasn't drinking alone anymore. A few more weeks on that road and he'd end up like daddy. Not a pleasant thought. But the drinking and the thinking hadn't been in vain. He could almost feel the--magic?
--at will. But he couldn't use it. Maybe I should see that shrink.

No time for that stupidity now.
He'd just got back from another fundraiser. Disasters were a lot of work, and for the face of the civilian relief effort even more so. At least he was still dressed for the part. Better than hosting a pair of government agents in his boxers.

"Tell Alejandra to bring them whatever they want to drink..."
He paused. "And have her open a bottle of whisky as well. Tell the agents I'll be there shortly."

He nodded. "Alright, Mr. Trano. Anything else?"

"That's it. Thanks."
And with that, the bodyguard was gone.

He sighed, stood up and stretched. It was going to be a long night. Might as well get to it. What the hell does the CIA want with me? I haven't even announced my candidacy yet.

The two agents shared a look when they were invited in. Reed adjusted a setting on her watch that initiated a jamming frequency. The range was decent from the device, but it was potent. More importantly, though perhaps less technologically intimidating, it began a timer. Reed and Abrams were only a visible part of a wider team. Their counterparts had a role to play as well. Together, they were all under a time limit.

The two agents were shown to a formal waiting room. By the time their host arrived, each were positioned on the edge of their seats, comfortable, but formal. Two glasses of water were set before them, though neither had yet to take a drink.

Nicholas himself appeared, and Agent Abrams stood to introduce himself and his partner. Reed locked eyes with the man, but stood only long enough to shake his hand before taking her former position. She remained quiet, but Reed was hardly demure. She was scanning, studious, and cautious, but confident. She folded her hands and watched.

"I apologize for the unexpected visit, but we understand you were contacted by the CCD. Invited to the Kremlin?" Abrams had a mid-atlantic flavor to his accent, but he wasn't trying to muffle it. Nor the slight intonation of russian to his syallables. Either he was of the ethnicity or he spent an enormous amount of time abroad. By the severe cut of his gaze, the explanation was likely the latter.

"As part of the press corps, you provide an unique opportunity." Abrams leaned in, resting his elbows on his knees, eyes locked upon Nicholas'. "You have a chance to serve your country Mister Trano, and we're here to help you do it." Something to Abrams' tone implied this was a non-negotiable service.

Just like the movies.
The two agents sat straight-backed and on the edge of their seats as Nicholas entered the room. They looked like they had just enough personality between them for a background character on a Saturday morning cartoon. Another quick glance and he noticed that Alejandra had already seen to their needs. Let's just hope she brought my whisky.

The sitting room wasn't massive--he didn't normally have large groups over his home--but there was a cluster of comfortable chairs in the corner which he was glad they had chosen. In spite of the thick padding, the two of them managed to look like they were sitting on wooden stools. She'd almost be pretty if she didn't look so damn serious.

He hadn't taken more than five steps into the room before one of them--the man, Abrams--stood to introduce themselves. After that was done with and Nicholas had reached the cluster of chairs the ice queen--Reed--deigned stand long enough to shake hands alongside her partner before sitting down to quietly watch. A moment later the men sat as well, and Nicholas was happy to note a full glass on the table next to his chair.

With formalities taken care of, Agent Abrams got straight to business. "I apologize for the unexpected visit, but we understand you were contacted by the CCD. Invited to the Kremlin?" The slight Russian accent didn't set off any alarm bells, although maybe it should have. "As part of the press corps, you provide an unique opportunity."

Well this wasn't what I was expecting.
Abrams continued, "You have a chance to serve your country Mister Trano, and we're here to help you do it." So they wanted him accept the invitation he'd already declined. I said no for damn good reason.
He was far more useful stateside than he was parroting CCD talking points in Moscow. Points for appealing to nationalism, though.

"I'd be glad to serve my country, Agent Abrams,"
He took a sip of whisky, "But I already declined that invitation. I'm more valuable here than fifty of me could be over there."
It was true, there was no point in sending him over to spy for them on a journalism visa. It wasn't like he was getting particularly special access.

But it wasn't going to be that easy to convince the U.S. government to have some sense. Abrams pressed forward. "Don't worry about the invitation," It was a weak excuse, "And with all due respect, you can blog from anywhere." Not untrue. "Over there, you'd be our man inside the Kremlin." I can't believe I'm actually considering this.

But still, he was doing a lot more than they wanted to admit. "You think that I've been spending my time blogging?"
He took another sip. "I've been working sixty hour weeks sending money to Ohio. Not counting my blogging."
It was bullshit. "I just don't see how you expect me to get information some anonymous agent can't."

They ignored his outburst. "One of us is the invited guest. The other of us," he gestured at himself and Agent Reed, "will be the anonymous agent on your team. You must understand Mister Trano, it is an extremely difficult task without a man on the inside. You'd be that man." So they wanted him for a decoy. As much as he hated to admit it, it made sense. I'm going to end up saying yes, aren't I?
He took another sip from his glass, although it suspiciously resembled a gulp.

"So... I'm going to spend a couple weeks--because let's be honest, I'm going to end up agreeing--in Russia,"
he really hated that triumphant look in Abrams' eyes, "and hope they don't throw me into a gulag."
All he had left to deal with was the PR nightmare. "Alright then, now that that's all settled I have two questions."
He gestured a thumb towards Agent Reed, "Why don't you talk? And, when do I leave?"

"Not Russia," Abrams interjected just as that accent heightened, "Moscow." He would know the distinction, Moscow was his field of operation after all. Reed meanwhile fixed him with a neutral stare, blinking briskly, perhaps surprised, perhaps another reason, then glanced at her watch.

From an interior pocket of his jacket, Abrams produced a miniaturized Wallet device. He pulled up the relevant information and handed it to Nicholas. "You'll find your itinerary and boarding passes on there. As well as a direct line to myself and Agent Reed. We'll travel together, as a team. The Kremlin will put us in the same suite at the hotel that will be our base of operations."

He pointed sharply, "There are sensitive files in that device which you should begin committing to memory. Kremlin layout, check points, surveillance protocols," Abrams folded his hands, "the sort of thing that makes men fall off the grid if they are caught with it."

"We'll brief you in detail upon arrival." He stood. Reed pulled her gaze away from the window and copied him. The two shared a look, Reed blinking coolly. Abrams broke the moment first, turning back to Nicholas before they took their leave.

"Alright."
He emptied the rest of his glass and put it back on the table with a loud click. "Seeing as I would rather not wake up in a re-education camp,"
he shook the Wallet, "I'll have this memorized before we go."

He looked at Abrams. "Do you need anybody to see you out?"
Abrams shook his head. "We're going to be spending a lot of time together over the next few weeks us three,"
He glanced at Reed, "Eventually you're going to have to talk."

The ice queen gave about as much of a response as she'd given before. "Well, I'll see you two later then."
There wasn't much left to say, so they left. And now the movie starts.
At least the next few weeks would be interesting. Now he just had to figure out how to explain his sudden trip to Moscow without being ridiculed.
