He doesn't know why.
And it won't come out. The words won't come out.
And he can't figure out the reason.
Deflect
Easier answers. Safer ones.

He won't endanger them any more than he has already.

He tastes bile.
His stomach churns.
Anger pushes through the numbness.

Another reason to say nothing.
Protect them.
"I am just one man. I can kill her. Rip her and her people to shreds. I could have pulled the entire building down. That wouldn't have made any of you less dead."
He can meet his father's eyes now.
"You said it. This goes to the top."
He swallows, ignoring the burning in his throat.
"Where can you go that I can be sure is safe? Who do I make sure watches over you and ma, the little ones, Pavel and Sofiya and their families. And their families."
He looks at his hands. The power. So useless. When it is really needed....useless.
He rises.
"It doesn't matter. Unless I can get out of this, you all are not safe. I will do what she says."
He looks at his father. "I love you pop,"
