Dead Weight (Pestovo Country Club)
#8
Jared had given the other man some space as he had sat down, something that said he wasn’t afraid of company, but was willing to sit in silence and not interact if that is what the other had wanted. They were soon joined by a third. It was the habit of a cop and soldier that had Jared subconsciously evaluating the man, taking note how his gaze went over the people here and made note of exits. The man’s posture and walk indicated that he probably had some sort of martial arts training and it made him stand out a bit. He wasn’t likely wealthy and was probably not used to such places - something Jared could sympathize with. He sat separate from them and ordered a vodka. It was enough to make Jared think that he wasn’t looking for company at this time.

It was the first man who spoke to him though. Jared took a sip of his scotch before turning to face the man. Jared wasn’t surprised that he had been recognized. The rich seemed to have a culture of their own. His picture had been among them simply because of his proximity to Emily Shale. Their nuptials had been something that everyone had seemed to know about, and that was why the man’s comment also caused no surprise.

”Seems my reputation precedes me,” he said with a grin. ”Or at least, my wife’s does.” Jared had been a nobody to these people until he had met Emily.

He took another sip of his scotch. It was incredibly smooth. ”She insisted that I needed to get out for a bit. She likely thinks that one or both of us need a break for a bit.” he stretched out a hand. ”Jared Vanders,” he introduced himself.

Jared noted the man had a Mediterranean accent, something he wouldn’t have noticed without having spent nearly a month in Italy for their honeymoon. They hadn’t gotten out much - likely the reason he was an expecting father now - but it had been enough to place the accent.
