The Nest
#10
Cadence kept her eyes on the statue, feeling the resonance Ezvin spoke of and looking into the mirror. She looked at her reflection in the statue. Ezvin continued to speak, and Cadence listened to his every word, turning to face him as he spoke. The words he spoke resonated in her ear. Truth.

Silence filled the cold air, and it didn't feel awkward even if she didn't have a word to describe it. Still she felt content in it, comfortable. Cadence was aware that something was happening, and aware that this experience was unlike any she had before. Ezvin stepped closer and she didn't step away. His hand tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. When he spoke, it was soft, a whisper, but it was the words she heard the loudest.

Reading social cues wasn't Cadence's best skill, but she felt she knew what this meant. She thought she knew what he wanted. Time seemed to her to freeze in that moment. This had never happened to her before. She'd been out with people - dates - whatever - but they had never ended well. Her own issues kept her from acting on anything, kept her from allowing something to happen.

"Someone else has to hold the other side for awhile."

The words echoed in her mind. She had said it to her parents not a week ago that she was tired of being alone. And here was someone...someone who really understood her. Someone who had opened up to her, and she had to him. Were his words an offer to her - or a request that she be there for him? That was what she didn't understand - that's what she couldn't figure out. Ezvin had said he'd never been good at the long game, and she had understood his meaning. He had reinforced that to her - or had he reinforced it to himself? When he looked in the mirror, what had it shown him.

Cadence also didn't know her own feelings on whether she wanted the long game or not. She had never thought that far ahead; she'd never had to think that far ahead. But she knew something - that she was okay with this. That she was for the first time in her life comfortable with this.

Time came back to normal. Ezvin was leaning in towards her. Her hand went up, her own motion mirroring the one Ezvin had had done before - her hand tenderly brushing a piece of his hair behind his ear. Her hand stayed on his cheek then as her eyes met his. She leaned in and gently pressed her lips to his. Her kiss was tentative, caused by nerves and not a lack of desire. She wanted this. She closed her eyes and her nerves began to recede a bit, but she could still feel her heart pounding within. Cadence's other hand went to Ezvin's shoulder as she almost reluctantly released her first kiss, her lips remaining close to his - an invitation.
