ADDICTIVE!
The inner Brown in me is totally geeking out right now!
Asc, that's probably because you're editing the Character Template page, which already has a name. You only need to go into "edit" in order to copy the formatting so you can paste it into the page you are creating, and then change the text as necessary.
To create a page, like Aria says, pick your title and do a search (make sure you're logged in!). If no page with that title exists, you'll have the option to create it. It'll also show you the other pages (if any) that have mentioned your title as a link, and which will link to your page once you've saved it.
Red links in other pages can also be used to create a page (example: in Lethe's page, I mention Hades. So "Hades" will be shown as a red link until a page under that name is created). If you click on it, it'll also give you the option to create a page with that name.
Putting double square brackets around a word is what creates links (Example: [[Hades]]). If a page under that name already exists it'll automatically link (and appear orange), if not it'll remain red until a page is created.
Whatever you call your page is what the "link" word or phrase is. If you call your character page, for example, "Nikolai Brandon" but come across an instance where you want the word Ascendancy to link to it too (any other word) you put your link word(s) in the square brackets first, and separate it from the word you want to be the link with a line | (example: [[Nikolai Brandon|Ascendancy]] - this will then have the word Ascendancy link to Nikolai Brandon's character page. That's also helpful when you've titled your character page name and surname, but want to provide a link to just first name on another page.
If there's a better way to do that, I don't know. I've just been looking at Aria's formatting to figure stuff like that out *grin*
